Exhibiting at The Smile Within, showing on the joint stand (H94) of the BDA Benevolent Fund and Bridge2aid at The British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show (NEC Birmingham) on 15th & 16th May during Mental Health Awareness Week.
Ossie Bruce is a retired General Dental Practitioner from Northern Ireland whose lifelong passion for photography has provided creativity, connection, and balance alongside a demanding professional career.
First inspired at a young age by his father and uncle, both keen photographers, Ossie’s interest deepened over the past 30 years, and while running his dental practice, photography offered Ossie a welcome counterbalance to daily pressures; taking him outdoors, sharpening his powers of observation, and introducing him to a supportive community through his local camera club.
What began as a creative outlet gradually evolved into exhibiting and selling work at craft fairs and retail outlets, while continuing to develop his technical skills from film through to the digital “darkroom” of Lightroom and Photoshop.
Today, Ossie describes photography as a way of seeing, one that is rooted in human perception alongside technology, where the real joy comes from being present in a landscape and responding instinctively to light, place, and mood.
Featured Artwork: Causeway Sun Setting
Minimum bid: £70.

- Framed photographic print
- 57 × 47 cm
This image was captured on a fine summer’s evening at the Giant’s Causeway on the Antrim Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Nature Reserve.
Photographing here is, as Ossie describes:
“a delight to the senses and an experience that naturally boosts wellbeing”.
The ever‑changing weather and light along the Northern Irish coastline offer both challenge and reward, requiring patience and careful timing.
For Ossie, being immersed in this dramatic landscape, watching the sun drop and the colours shift, is a reminder of why photography remains such a powerful way to disconnect from everyday concerns and reconnect with nature.
“I’d love to capture the Causeway in snow – that presents its own challenge as it rarely snows there so I’m still waiting for that opportunity. The best pictures are the ones you’ve yet to capture!”
This exquisite causeway sunset would be a welcome addition to any home celebrating the wondrous nature of the scenery.
Alternatively, the beauty of the landscape offers moments of calm and reflection for dental teams or visitors to your dental practice.
Featured Artwork: Buachaille Etive Mòr
Minimum bid: £70

- Framed photographic print
- 57 × 47 cm
Taken during a road trip through the west of Scotland, this photograph features Buachaille Etive Mòr, the iconic mountain that stands at the entrance to Glen Etive near Glencoe.
Instantly recognisable, the location holds broad appeal while remaining deeply personal.
Surrounded by walking routes and vast open space, the area invites exploration and reflection.
Ossie was drawn to how the grandeur of the Scottish Highlands effortlessly clears the mind, making work worries feel distant and insignificant.
Landscape images such as this resonate strongly with viewers, Ossie believes, because they stir personal connections and memories, allowing people to project their own experiences onto the scene. It would be a beautiful addition to any home or dental practice.
Photography, Wellbeing and the Human Eye
For Ossie, photography supports wellbeing in simple but powerful ways: getting outside, concentrating on light and composition, and focusing attention away from daily stress.
He values the social side of photography just as much, building long-lasting friendships formed through camera clubs and shared creative learning over many years.
“I was part of the student photography club at Queen’s University and after my first child was born, my wife bought me membership of a camera club to help build a network outside of work and family commitments.”
This social support has remained constant throughout Ossie’s life. His children also have a good eye for photography, and his nephew is a professional wedding photographer. It’s clearly something passed down from his father and uncle to Ossie and now to future generations.
While embracing digital tools, Ossie believes the essence of photography remains human.
“The medium matters less than the eye,” he reflects.
Inspired by photographers such as Ansel Adams, he continues to seek out images that feel authentic, grounded and emotionally resonant.
Whether photographing vast landscapes or quiet dawn moments, or like capturing his son surfing at sunrise on a Portrush beach, Ossie’s work reflects a deep appreciation for nature, presence and perspective.

Ossie Bruce has two works featured in The Smile Within exhibition. The artworks will be presented on his behalf.
