Support Through Transition – From Dental School to Foundation Training
After graduating from Bristol University Dental School, I moved to Newcastle to begin my foundation training. This exciting new chapter in my career was made much smoother thanks to the support I received from the BDA Benevolent Fund during what could have been a very challenging transition.
During my student days, I had occasionally struggled financially and had once searched online for help available to dental students. That search led me to the BDA Benevolent Fund’s YouTube channel, where I watched a video explaining how to apply for a grant. At the time, I didn’t need to pursue it further — but I remembered it when circumstances changed after graduation.
My plan for the summer before starting work was to take a well-earned break and also work part-time to build some savings. Unfortunately, I needed an operation to repair my ACL, which meant I was unable to work as planned. As the start of my foundation training approached, I was only 2 days post op when my flatmate started viewing flats in Newcastle and I realised I needed help with the upfront costs of moving, particularly the deposit and first month’s rent.
A friend reminded me about the BDA Benevolent Fund, and recalling the video I had seen, I decided to apply. Even though I was fresh out of hospital and on strong medication, I was able to complete the online application form and submit all the required documents. Shortly afterwards, Laura, the CEO, called me personally to talk through my situation. She was kind, empathetic, and reassuring, and I was fortunate to receive the help I needed just in time to secure my new home. That financial support removed a huge weight from my shoulders and allowed me to focus fully on my recovery and my upcoming role.
I found the application process clear and straightforward. Laura also told me about the Fund’s wellbeing resources, which are available to anyone visiting the website — you don’t need to have applied for financial help or even be a BDA member to access them.
I would encourage any dental student or new graduate facing financial pressures, especially during the transition from university to foundation training, to explore the support offered by the BDA Benevolent Fund. It made a real difference to me, and it could do the same for you.
